After the huge success of publications about Tamara Łempicka (1898–1980) focusing on the painting work and life of this extraordinary and talented artist, this new publication is a mini-album focusing on Lempicka's drawings. There we will find not only sketches and studies for the painter's most famous and most expensive paintings, but also some of the first drawings she created, thanks to which her enormous talent was revealed, as well as sensual and delicate sketches of women and still lifes.

About the artist:

Tamara de Lempicka, born Tamara Rozalia Gurwik-Górska, was a Polish painter who spent her working life in France and the United States. She is best known for her polished Art Deco portraits of aristocrats and the wealthy, as well as her highly stylized paintings of nudes. Born in Warsaw in 1898, she briefly moved to Saint Petersburg where she married Tadeusz Łempicki, a prominent Polish lawyer, before traveling to Paris. There, she studied painting with Maurice Denis and André Lhote. Her style was a blend of late, refined cubism and neoclassical influences, particularly inspired by the work of Jean-Dominique Ingres1. Lempicka was an active participant in the artistic and social life of Paris between the wars. In 1928, she became the mistress of Baron Raoul Kuffner, a wealthy art collector from the former Austro-Hungarian Empire. After divorcing Tadeusz Łempicki in 1931 and the death of Kuffner’s wife in 1933, she married Kuffner in 1934, earning her the nickname “The Baroness with a Brush.” Following the outbreak of World War II in 1939, she and her husband moved to the United States, where she painted celebrity portraits, still lifes, and abstract works in the 1960s. Her work fell out of fashion after World War II but experienced a resurgence in the late 1960s with the rediscovery of Art Deco. She eventually moved to Mexico in 1974, where she passed away in 1980, with her ashes scattered over the Popocatépetl volcano at her request.
